Mint-flavoured vapes pose higher risk to Lung Health, Study reveals

A new study revealing that adding mint flavour to vape liquid can make it more toxic and damaging to the lungs. Vaping, the act of inhaling aerosolized liquid, commonly known as “vapor,” has gained popularity in recent years as an alternative to traditional smoking. However, concerns about the safety and health effects of vaping continue to arise.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine conducted a study using a specially designed “vaping robot” that mimics the mechanics of human breathing and vaping behavior to analyze the effects of menthol-flavored vape liquid on the lungs. The study found that menthol-flavored vape liquid generates more toxic microparticles than menthol-free juice, indicating that the addition of mint flavoring could potentially increase the harm caused by vaping.

The researchers also examined the medical records of vapers and found that those who used menthol-flavored vape liquid took shallower breaths and had poorer lung function compared to non-menthol smokers, regardless of age, gender, race, and whether they were smoking nicotine or cannabis products. This suggests that the negative impact of menthol-flavored vape liquid on lung health may be independent of other factors.

According to Kambez H Benam, associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and senior author of the study, there is a common misconception, especially among young people, that vaping is safe. However, even nicotine-free vape liquids contain numerous compounds that have the potential to harm the lungs. Just because a substance is considered safe for consumption as food does not necessarily mean it is safe to inhale.

The findings of this study add to the growing body of evidence that raises concerns about the safety of vaping. While vaping has been marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, research has shown that it is not without risks. E-cigarette aerosol, commonly referred to as “vapor,” contains harmful substances such as nicotine, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein, which can have detrimental effects on lung health.

Menthol, a common flavoring agent used in vape liquids, has been previously associated with negative health effects. Studies have shown that menthol can numb the throat and airways, making it easier to inhale larger amounts of harmful substances into the lungs. Menthol has also been linked to increased addiction potential and may facilitate the transition from experimentation to regular use of vaping products, especially among young people.

The findings of this study highlight the need for further research and regulation in the vaping industry. Currently, e-cigarettes and vape liquids are not regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the same way as traditional tobacco products, which leaves room for potential risks to public health. The study’s authors call for more stringent regulations on the use of menthol and other flavorings in vape liquids to protect the lung health of users, especially vulnerable populations such as youth and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

In addition to regulatory measures, public awareness and education about the potential risks of vaping are crucial. Many people, especially young individuals, may be unaware of the harmful effects of vaping, as it is often marketed as a harmless and trendy alternative to smoking. It is important to communicate the risks associated with vaping, including the potential harm of menthol-flavored vape liquids, to the general public, especially to those who are considering or currently using vaping products.

Furthermore, healthcare professionals play a crucial role in educating patients about the risks of vaping and providing support for those who want to quit or reduce their use of vaping products. As more evidence emerges about the potential harm of vaping, healthcare providers should be equipped with up-to-date information to effectively counsel patients and provide appropriate interventions.

In conclusion, the study conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine sheds light on the potential harm of adding mint flavor to vape liquid. The findings suggest that menthol-flavored vape liquid may generate more toxic particles and have negative effects on lung function, making it more damaging to the lungs compared to menthol-free options. This underscores the need for further research, regulation, and public awareness about the risks of vaping.
