LAHORE: Imran Khan, the former prime minister and PTI Chairman, has received a tax notice from the Excise and Taxation Department for a luxury house tax addressed to his mother, Shaukat Khanum, who passed away 38 years ago.
The notice requires Imran Khan to pay a tax of Rs 36 lacs and provide information on the property within seven days, with failure to do so resulting in a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan. The tax notice addressed to Imran Khan’s late mother has gone viral on social media, with netizens criticizing the government for taxing someone who passed away almost four decades ago.
The PTI social media lead, Azhar Mashwani, and Imran Khan’s political secretary, Hafiz Farhat Abbas, condemned the government for issuing a tax notice to Shaukat Khanum Sahiba’s name, calling it a new low for the imported governments and their handlers. Some netizens have responded by sending donations to the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital and urging others to do the same.
