Bali to ban tourists from renting motorbikes

The Indonesian island known as the “island of the gods” is set to introduce new regulations that may not be as appealing to foreign tourists.

Bali governor Wayan Koster announced on March 12 that his government would be taking steps to prevent illegal work by foreign visitors on the island, which could impact those who identify as “digital nomads.”

Moreover, Koster mentioned that tourists will no longer be permitted to rent motorbikes, which are a popular mode of transportation on the island. He informed the reporters that visitors will be limited to using cars for travel purposes.

Koster explained that individuals who ride motorcycles without valid documentation or helmets, drive recklessly, use counterfeit Indonesian ID cards, or misuse residency and work permits would be specifically targeted, particularly if they are foreigners.

Bali, which is primarily a Hindu island in a country with a Muslim majority, has been a popular choice for backpackers and beach enthusiasts for a long time. However, the relationship between locals and tourists was strained during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During his recent address, the governor attributed the sluggish progress on the island, which depends heavily on tourism, to the pandemic.

In October 2021, the island reopened to vaccinated tourists from 19 nations, such as China, France, and New Zealand. Currently, citizens of 86 countries are eligible for visas upon arrival on the island.
