AI discovers new planet outside our solar system

A group of researchers from the University of Georgia has used artificial intelligence (AI) to uncover evidence of a new planet beyond our solar system. The team utilized machine learning techniques to scan protoplanetary disks, which are the gas and dust formations surrounding young stars, and identified an exoplanet with a high level of accuracy.

This discovery is a significant milestone in the application of AI to identify exoplanets that have not been previously detected. By utilizing machine learning algorithms, the research team was able to find a signal in data that had already been analyzed, leading to the identification of an undiscovered planet.

Jason Terry, who is a doctoral student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UGA’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the lead author of the study, clarified that conventional methods were employed to verify the planet’s existence.

However, the models generated by the machine learning algorithms pointed the researchers in the right direction and provided guidance for further simulations.

The study illustrates how AI can be employed as a tool to improve the accuracy and efficiency of large-scale projects, such as exploring deep space. The researchers were able to detect something that had previously gone unnoticed, thus extending our understanding of the universe beyond our solar system.
